Unbelievable! That's what I thought when I opened up this old one way fuse box.
I do not tend to comment on other electricians work but in this case I will make an exception. According to the customer that called me in to take a look at why his RCD kept tripping indoors, He said the other electrician, Who has now moved away, said that the installation was fine and the new ring main he had installed in the garage was also fine!
Well, as you can see from the picture I took there are problems and these are excluding the problems I found with the whole installation like feeding the fluorescent light from a socket! No fused spur in sight! If you can see in the picture, the cables at the top are, and I will use that word again!, unbelievable, The neutrals were not cut to the correct length, but worst of all the line conductors were not even screwed up as there were no screws in the terminal! And I will also point out, though I obviously do not even need to tell you this, One earth cable was sleeved but not connected to anything and the other was not even sleeved and was sitting above the live cables!
I am quite speechless about this one, Not because I haven't seen installs like this before, but because it was a so called electrician that had carried out this work.
I am sure all the readers of the My Local Electrician website would love to hear other electricians stories like this one. Create yourself an account for free then post your own blog. I would also love to hear your experiences and this type of work you come across.

One asssumes that the customer paid good money for what they thought was a competent person qualified to carried out the job requested. Customer should always check a person qualification before engaging them...else we could all say we are brain surgeons.
Thanks for your comments Chris. I totally agree with you, customers should always check a persons qualifications. Hopefully with guys like us posting comments on blogs like this and the help from others like the electrical safety council, customers and the public will hopefully get more educated to this!
