"Labelling on electrical equipment sold by DIY stores must be used to warn that it is illegal for an unregistered person to carry out most electrical works in the home, says the Communities and Local Government Committee. In addition, public awareness about the risk of the odourless, invisible and potentially lethal carbon monoxide fumes must be raised to increase safety in the home, warns the Committee.
This statement is what the Select committe are recommending and they will be writing to all the big electrical/DIY stores to highlight this key recommendation.
You can read more on this on the parliment website HERE
It does seem at the moment this is only a recommendation, but it is a step in the right direction!

Still don't see the point in good old Part P when anyone can buy and install any kind of electrical equipment.
Electrical sales
More should be done to stop electrical equipment being sold at car boot sales I have seen several consumer units MCBs etc on sale
Electrical equipment in DIY stores should have warning labels.
Gazza, thanks for sharing the info. I’m sceptical of any voluntary scheme as the ‘Sheds’ just want to sell stuff. They’re not bothered about simple matters of safety or competency. It’s about sales volume.
I would prefer 100% of works to be notifiable via Part P and minimum £5000 fine for non-compliance by person ordering work and the same for any individual undertaking works outside of competency.
There are too many Trade Associations with vested interests. If Part P was administered in a similar manner to Gas Safe, the whole industry would be stronger; lives would be saved and less property fires.
Even requiring evidence of competency or Trade Association membership to buy electrical equipment would be a huge step forward for safety. What are the chances of that happening?
