Trade Skills 4 U Celebrate National Apprenticeship Week

Apprentice Electrician

National Apprenticeship week kicks off in style with the Prime Minister saying he wants to increase the uptake of Apprenticeships amongst school leavers to follow in the footsteps of Germany.

This is a very encouraging start for an important week which celebrates the value of apprenticeships. Not only does the week promote how great an apprenticeship can be for learning a new trade, but also the benefits of taking on an apprenticeship to an employer. Headline news this morning claims that Apprentices will contribute £3.4bn to the UK economy by 2022.

How to Find A Reputable Electrician

Tradesperson

There are many horror stories around about unregistered people carrying out work which they are not qualified or registered to do. When planning electrical work in the home, it is important that the right person carries out the work. This isn't just looking at the bottom line price, it is about what you get for what you pay for and most importantly that the electrician carrying out the work is qualified and registered to do so.

Construction Materials now turning Eco with Recovinyl

Recycled PVC

Mentioning the word Eco to most people and you are likely to find their ears pricking. Eco products and the depleting of the worlds resources are hot topics at the moment.
When planning home improvements, selecting Eco products has always been at huge expense in the past. PVC-U windows may have been a poor environmental choice, the same with guttering and fascias but is this still the case? At Trade Skills 4U we wonder how many construction industry workers such as electricians, double glaziers, plumbers and builders are aware of Recovinyl?

Pat Testing Kits for All Purposes – Choosing Wisely

Those approaching the world of PAT testing for the first time could be forgiven for thinking that all portable appliance testers are cut from the same cloth and ideal for all duties. In reality however it really isn’t as black and white as this – the differences between the various PAT testers on the market today are literally night and day.

Have you ever fancied a role reversal at work, perhaps you fancy spending a day as the director?

This is exactly what happened at Pendennis shipyard in Cornwall when several apprentices were given a chance to run the company for 1 day whilst the 4 directors undertook their apprenticeship roles.

The directors undertook several tasks during the day including undertaking an engine realignment and other work within the fabrication, surface finishing and electrical teams.

Finally Connected to Mains Electricity after a 30 year wait!

Finally Connected to Mains Electricity after 30 years!

A pensioner from County Derry has mains electricity in his home after finally being connected to the National Grid.

The pensioner cannot believe how amazing just flicking a switch can be! Anyone would think this would be a news archive dated from many years previously but no, this was a brand new news item in December 2012!

Having his electricity cables installed at his home last year marked the end of a 30 year wait to connect to the National Grid. The pensioner described the experience as 'a miracle'.

What's the difference between Earthing & Bonding?

earthing and bonding

Earthing and bonding have often been confused as being the same thing when in fact the two are quite distinct from each other. Many electricians hear the term 'earth bonding' this essentially is a meaningless term that has somehow found its way into everyday vocabulary for some electricians. Trainee electricians are often rightly confused when they hear this term as of course earth bonding is technically incorrect. So why do we earth and bond? In basic terms, the idea of earth and bonding is to prevent electric shock.  Let’s use a kitchen as an example.
