Training to be an electrician

Hi There,

I was wondering whether you could give me some advice on becoming an electrician. I'm currently 27 years of age and so feel I’m too old for an apprenticeship and have been looking into other avenues for getting trained up, this is where I would like some advice before I commit to a training provider I wanted to find out what industry professionals think of such courses and whether an employer would consider someone who has trained through a private company rather than an apprenticeship. The two companies I’ve looked at are OLCI construction training and Train for trade skills:

OLCI put you through C&G 2330 levels 2 and 3 and 2356 NVQ level 3 and say on average people can complete this in 6 to 9 months.

Train 4 trade skills put you through the same qualifications + C&G 2382 17th edition and full scope part P theory and practical, C&G 2377 and lastly C&G 2391.

Any advice on this method of training and the training providers in question would be much appreciated, as I’m quite confused at the moment.

Cheers

Dan

Hi Dan. I've used OLCI doing

Hi Dan.

I've used OLCI doing the 2330 levels 2 and 3 route. What they don't tell you is that you have to fit your diary around the dates that they state. Completing their courses means taking time off work as and when their course dates become available. Because of this it took me more like 2 years to complete.

As for the 2356 NVQ, to complete this you need employment and need to cover a range of electrical work. Even until my last date at OLCI, they never found me any work placement.
